Do schools need a licence to screen movies?
Schools will require a licence if films are shown as part of an entertainment programme.
Will the PTA activities be covered by the licence e.g. Cheese and Wine evening with a film, or will a separate licence be required?
A single title licence is required for groups that are not covered under the licence. The licence is for a specific group at a specific address i.e. pupils and teachers in the school.
I want to show films to an audience of lower than the lowest band. Can I get a cheaper licence?
The lowest band bracket is 0 -250 group size. At £81 for an annual licence, this still works out as good value.
If we currently hold a PVS licence for our school, are we covered if we take a film to watch on a coach whilst on a field trip?
No, the coach company will require their own licence for their vehicle.
We only show films in the classroom as part of the tutorial - do we need a licence?
The playing of a film for the purpose of instruction is not an infringement of copyright and a licence for this is not required. However it is likely that some films will not be used during instruction and PVSL will ensure you are covered for every eventuality.
Can we promote the films in our afterschool club to the intended audience through posters and the intranet?
Schools are permitted to use internal promotions limited to the school premises and to the licensed audience only.
Can we invite guests to our screening nights?
No, this falls outside of the licence terms. A single title licence is required to cover the event.
We want to take films on our skiing trip for use in the accommodation - these trips are usually in Europe - can we do this?
The PVS Licence only covers the premises named on the licence, it is not transferable. PVSL is only available for use in the UK at the present time. Filmbank can provide you with an alternative licence to cover you for your trip.
Our school is occupied during the summer months by a training college who make use of our facilities and accommodation. Will our licence cover them?
No, the training college forms another group and will need to be covered under a separate licence.
We only show films at Christmas - do we need a licence?
You will require either a PVS Licence, or a single title licence. A single title licence is available from Filmbank, not CEFM. A single title licence gives you access to pre-retail release titles from Filmbank (titles are usually available 8 - 12 weeks from cinema release).
We use film nights to raise money for our school can we do this under the PVS Licence?
There are restrictions to using film in this way. Filmbank recommend, for maximum value, that a single title licence is purchased which gives you access to titles pre-retail release and the opportunity to charge and sell snacks during the screening. These titles are available usually 8-12 weeks from cinema release and prior to retail - please check the Filmbank website for further information.
